Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday (5 April) responded to The Guardian report which claimed that the Modi government ordered killings of terrorists in Pakistan.
“India will give a befitting reply to any act of terror emanating from our neighbouring country. Those who try to disturb India’s peace and carry out terror activities on Indian soil, if they flee to Pakistan, we will enter Pakistan and eliminate them," Singh said in an interview to CNN-News18.
He said that even Pakistan now understands that India won’t sit like a lame duck if provoked by terror attacks.
“India now has the strength and Pakistan is also understanding this now,” Singh said.
He, however, added that India wants to maintain cordial relations with its neighbouring countries.
“If one sees India’s past, you can see we have never initiated any aggression against any neighbour. But if someone keeps instigating India and promote terrorism in India, we will not spare them,” the Defence Minister added.
Singh's response comes after a report in the British newspaper 'The Guardian' claimed that Indian government ordered the killing of terrorists living in Pakistan.
This was part of the government's wider strategy to eliminate terrorists living on foreign soil, The Guardian reported citing Indian and Pakistani intelligence operatives.
According to the report, India’s foreign intelligence agency allegedly began to carry out assassinations abroad as part of an emboldened approach to national security after 2019.
The agency, the Research & Analysis Wing (R&AW), is directly controlled by the office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian and Pakistani officials cited in the report claimed that the killings were a response to a perceived need to preemptively eliminate threats posed by individual charged with serious and violent terror offences, and residing outside India's borders.
The latest claims involve nearly 20 killings in Pakistan since 2020, reportedly orchestrated by Indian intelligence sleeper cells primarily operating from the United Arab Emirates.
